Sharon Brown's Story

Christmas Newsletter 2013 Living on a lake was something I’d always wanted to do. But trying to fit the girls and I into the cottage was getting increasingly difficult as they become young ladies. My responsibilities and the economy in Michigan had dictated I settle back into more of a mothering role to sync with the new direction my life had taken since 2009. Still, I lived with the uneasiness of wondering when I would be able to move the girls into a bigger house. By now, I know that sometimes we have to wait before we can make changes; and so we started this year focused on everything but moving. Both girls were busy with school. The winter passed quickly. I kept my name on my recruiter network lists, and in May, the call came for a senior technical writer for the State of Michigan on a major new healthcare initiative called The Data Hub. It was a job that suited me well, as I was determined to bid and win more writing contracts in retirement. Though a Republican was governor, the state had voted to expand Medicaid through Obamacare. The irony for me is I am against Obama-anything, but the federal benefits to states going along with the program are huge, even if propped up with fiat money. So I was selected to become the program’s technical writer. And so recognizing a good deal when I saw one, I signed the contract and went to work. My most interesting assignment to date was creating a presentation for Gov. Snyder! Then as usual, by waiting instead of worrying, I saw other doors opening that would move us towards our goal. A bigger house on our same street came up for sale. The right realtor showed me the house and by September, we had moved into 2743 Bartlett Road, Pleasant Lake, MI 49272. The girls got rooms of their own and a den with family theater, the latest and greatest thing these days. I couldn’t tell you though, as Marilyn is the one who will set it all up once we get beyond the holidays. Writing is much less annoying than new technology. Having two technologically astute young girls around comes in mighty handy today. So we are spending our first Christmas in our new house. It was built in 2006; so nothing needs to be done to it. Seeing as how my repair skills start and end with a screwdriver and hammer,...Expand for more
this is a good thing. It has a broad front porch on which I will hang a swing next summer. WV habits die hard. It is peaceful to sit out on the porch and just watch the lake’s moods. The view at sunset is spectacular! I find I enjoy watching the lake every day as each new weather pattern brings lake moods I had not seen before. This past summer, Erin and her family came to stay with us for a week. What fun! Can you imagine 4 more people in the cottage and 3 little dogs? We did it! Good weather allowed us to get outside a lot, and the swimming pool was a boon for the kids. This summer, we’ll have far nicer accommodations for my favorite niece! The entire lower level will be available to them! Can’t wait! Thanks to each of you who sent us a card or a letter or otherwise kept in touch this year. My cards get later each year! But I still think of each of you as much if not more than ever! The news that wasn’t as good this year is that Ron and I divorced in late August. All I can say is it’s easier the second time around. I’m not proud to say that. Marriage is an all or nothing kind of commitment. I didn’t want the commitment. Times they are a changing. In early November, son Tony’s 34 year-old wife, Shelly, had a heart attack. She’s recuperating. I hugged her with prayers of gratitude this holiday. Tony has been promoted to a POC position at Roush Technologies, the firm he's been with since after high school. He's a very very smart young man, and very good father to my grandsons. He coaches their para-professional baseball team in the Detroit area. You will see and hear about these boys again! Daughter Jeannie is doing so well! I am very proud of her. She's married to a wonderful fellow and spends lots of times with the kids and I. The girls are young divas, smart as whips and ever so beautiful! Both are heading for careers in music, I think. I wish each of you the very best in 2014. Live, laugh, and love much. Life is too short. ~Sharon Brown-Baller-Fernandez (maybe 3 would be a charm??
